Colonies of mouse-tailed bats live in the Middle East. They roost in large ruined buildings. Sometimes the buildings are old palaces and temples. The bats eat insects. In the winter, they sleep most of the time. When they are asleep they can live for many weeks without food and water. The bats are fat when they go to sleep. When the winter has gone and they wake up, they are thin. While they were asleep, their bodies used the fat for food.
